This Is an Average Time to Wake Up in the Morning

This Is an Average Time to Wake Up in the Morning

I peer out the window
to her figure walking off towards school
a calculus test an application a smooth tabletop
the desert is sterile and perfect
I long for its slight, comforting emptiness
and for you to see it there with me
I will prove to you that it exists

show me a way to pour weakness
out of me steadily over time
like a dripping cave
the summer’s a traveling mattress
a hand on your loose shirt
each new gorgeous place and challenge
and my nose to your unwashed hair

we open the windows
drive and air ourselves out
you are especially beautiful when you are free
on the road and of the land
your olive eyes cut
sharp through slickrock
it has been, will be

the singeing disappointment rings
it’s not a beautiful sunset
it’s not to be trusted

it has been, will be
